Cell Phones

I want to know how you feel about cell phones in the classroom. I have seen classes where the teacher requires the students to "check" in their cell phone at her desk, they just leave it on her desk as they walk into the classroom. I have also seen a class with no policy and the students were texting like crazy! How do you determine if they are looking up information or texting? What's your opinion and solution?

  1. I think that cell phones can be good and bad for children. If students are choosing to text instead of participate in the lesson, they should not be allowed to have them. As a teacher though, I would re-evaluate my teaching methods to better engage the students so they want to be involved.

  3. Disconnect technology from lack of class engagement. A student not paying attention in class for any reason (Comic book, Walkman, iPhone) should be counseled for their behavior. The medium may have changed, but the difficulty of capturing a student's attention seems like an old problem.

  4. At work we collect the kids cell phones for some different reasons than might be felt by some teachers, but I find it beneficial for both the teacher and the student. Then the teacher can focus on teaching, the student on what the teacher is teaching and for those kids who have ADD or another disability that might cause them to have a harder time concentrating than it eliminates that distractions for them.

  5. My rule is if I see it, then I get it. Student's shouldn't have their cell phones in class, but I wouldn't presume to take them unless they are playing with them.

  6. I don't think that students should be permitted to use cell phones in class. If a student was doing research or looking something up on his/her phone -- the technology may be helpful. However, let's be serious, the majority are texting or on their facebook page. I doubt that this could be considered an appropriate use of technology.

  7. I think it all depends on the way you set up your class. Trust is key so if you can set up a good system where they are held accountable for their cell phone use that could help.

  8. I don't plan on letting my students use cell phones in my classroom. Since I plan on teaching younger grades in elementary school, I'm hoping most of my students don't have cell phones yet. If they do, I will implement a "no cell phones in the classroom" policy and they'll have to keep it in their backpacks...That sounds kind of mean, huh? Oh well. ;)
